Sustainability & Refinishing Furniture

We are all aware of the crisis we face with climate change, and I am not one to preach. I am, however, quietly happy knowing that by its very nature, restoring and refinishing furniture is the essence of sustainability. By using vintage furniture available in abundance in Portugal rather than buying new, we help to reduce the strain on natural resources, cut down on what ends up in our landfills and lower emissions generated by shipping and transportation. As such, there is very little waste when it comes to The Statement Piece. Instead, we are contributing to the circular economy by extending the lifecycle of furniture rather than disposing of high-quality pieces that just need some love.
Aside from furniture, my studio is packed with all the products and tools I need to achieve a great, professional refinish. I use the best sustainable professional-grade products available, which is the reason I prefer to work with the Fusion Mineral Paint range of exquisite products. I also use Fusion's huge range of environmentally friendly glazes, varnishes, metallics, topcoats, stains (even their cleaning products are all gentle on nature). They're all non-toxic, lead-free, virtually odourless, and contain no ammonia or formaldehyde. Even the paint brushes I use - Staalmeester - are made from synthetic bristle and FSC wood, and I strive to use primers and sealants that are also sustainable.
There's a special satisfaction in taking something old and jaded away from the landfills and creating something beautiful and remarkable. It may only be a sideboard or a dining table but it feels meaningful to play even a tiny part in pulling something lovely back from unnecessary destruction.
